REMOVAL/INSTALLATION OF KEY SWITCH #65-70-0148
WARNING: Installation should only be done by properly qualified and trained personnel who have had basic training in engine-driven systems using batteries for cranking the engine. Specific care needs to be taken when working around batteries due to the nature of batteries and the high current they store. Personnel performing this work should be familiar with standard wiring practices and associated tools and procedures.
WARNING: Disconnect the battery from the system before performing the installation of the key switch. The safest procedure is to first disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, then disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery. Make sure the battery terminals (posts) cannot short (or touch) to anything while performing this work.
WARNING: It is your responsibility to make sure the installation conforms to OSHA and local codes for the equipment. This may require lock out / tag out of the energy sources and equipment.
WARNING: Failure to observe these warnings can result in damage to equipment, personal injury or worse.
TOOLS REQUIRED: 3/8” Nut Driver, Slip Joint Pliers, Channellock Pliers
Removal of Key Switch (see next section for Installation of Key Switch)
Only after the equipment has been locked out and tagged out and the battery has been disconnected, locked and tagged out, identify the control panel mounting bolts. It may be possible to perform this procedure by loosening the bottom bolts and removing the top bolts; however, performing this procedure may require complete removal of the control panel. If weather conditions are not optimal, complete removal of the control panel is advised as the work can be accomplished much more easily on a work bench than on the equipment. Performing this procedure while the control panel is still mounted may result in lost fasteners or cause strain to the mounting and/or wires.
After proper preparation is completed, identify the terminals on the back of the key switch.
IGN: Ignition or On ST: Start ACC: Accessory (used in minimal applications)
The wires typically have ring terminals crimped on them. The ring terminals are held on by 3/8” nuts and lock washers.
All of the connections should be identified and the wires labeled before removal. When reattaching wire, ensure that wires are correctly reconnected on key switch terminals. A schematic of the control panel should be available to make sure connections are correct. Once the wires have been removed and properly secured to inhibit interference, the key switch can be mechanically removed. This can be accomplished by holding the body of the key switch with large pliers, such as Channellock pliers. It is better if the jam nut against the surface of the back of the control panel can be held. Use slip-joint pliers to unscrew the face nut. Carefully remove the old switch from the back side of the control panel.
Installation of Key Switch
WARNING: Ensure the equipment has been locked and tagged out and the battery has been disconnected, locked and tagged out.
Place key switch washer on key switch with scalloped side toward body of switch.
Thread nut part way down neck of switch.
Place key slot end through panel, back to front. IGN terminal on the back of the key switch shall be oriented toward the top of the panel.
Ensure about 2 threads (maximum of 3 threads) of the key slot protrude from the front of the panel. If more than 3 threads are protruding, adjust key switch washer on key switch until desired number of threads are showing.
Hand tighten face nut. Use slip joint pliers on the face nut and Channellock pliers on the back of the key switch. Tighten face nut until switch is secure.
The key switch is properly installed from a mechanical point of view when: 1.) The key switch is tight in the panel, and key hole is vertical in the off position. 2.) The IGN terminal on back of key switch is centered and on top.
After proper mechanical installation is successful, reconnect the wires to the proper terminals on the key switch. Tighten terminals to 4-6 inch lbs. of torque.
Reconnect the battery, and test the function of the key switch.
