Sending ASCII Characters over RS485

I am trying to send ASCII character/s over RS485 and not over the Modbus protocol. Then read in the response of the ASCII characters. Using it essentially as serial communication.  I am not sure how to go about this or whether it is possible if anyone is able to shed some light on this?
