This is the place to start if you have never used PowerVision Configuration Studio Software before or are looking for a refresher. In this section we will be using version 2.8, however, many of the principles covered here are easily translated into other versions of PowerVision. Depending on the version you are using, there may be some limitations and other ways of accomplishing some of the tasks covered in this section. So it is encouraged to download version 2.8 while going through this lesson. The configuration that is developed here builds upon itself.

Accessing & Saving Files
There are 3 main file structure types to be aware of:
- .murphyConfig - these are database files used to configure within PowerVision. They are created in the PowerVision software by using the Save and Save As functions. These files are automatically saved on the computer’s local hard drive at: Documents > Murphy Configurations > Version _._ > DBs
- update.tar.gz (or update.pv1)* - this file type create a package of the current configuration by using the Create function within PowerVision and can be saved where the user directs. These files are used to upload configurations to the display.
- update-full.tar.gz (or update-full.pv1)* - this file types is created by accessing the Tools and selecting Create Full Install. These files are used to create an install package with the configuration, OS and firmware. They can be saved where the user directs. These files are used to upload full installs onto the display.
*PV780B, PV1100 & PV1200 series displays use the .pv1 file format.
Note for PowerVision 2.9 and above: The Create button is replaced with the Firmware button and configurations and full install packages can be generated and deployed to the display.
File Naming Note: It is important to note on the update.tar and updated-full.tar files that the prefix and suffix designations remain intact in order for the file to perform properly. You can assign a specific identifier to this file by adding a designation between the prefix and suffix as shown here:
- update.myconfigname.tar (or update.myconfigname.pv1)
- update-full.myconfigname.tar (or update-full.myconfigname.pv1)
